Not trying to cause an uproar, but would be interested to know other riders ideas. I have posted something similar on another forum and am waiting for the screams against my logic. Thought it would be a good topic to kick around here as there seems to be a wider demographic of riders of different ages and types of bike.
The topic comes up all the time on every bike forum. Yes I agree you should wear protective gear when you ride, but I also think it should be each individuals choice.
Road riders will all be bitching and whining when the government legislates that approved protective clothing must be worn and it has to meet a new government standard and the gear you currently own is not up to standard or doesn't have the correct label sown onto it (kind of like the new helmet standard). So your $2000 race suit with matching boots and gloves will be worthless.
And who will set these standards? Will they be different depending on what you side? Does a 50cc scooter rider need a set of full leathers with boots and gloves? Do I have to don a race suit to go 5kms down the road?
So think very carefully when pushing the "everyone must wear full leathers/kevlar gear" barrow you might just get what you are asking for.
