Hey all,
A question for you about oil & filters. I have a GSX-R1000, K6. It has nearly 30,000Km on the clock now. I ride it 5 days a week to work (~200Km per week), plus the occasional weekend ride and am aiming to do one track day per month from now on.
Previously I have changed the oil every two or three track days (if they occur within a month or so of each other), or before a track day if more than 3,000Km street riding.
I'm going to do an oil and filter change tomorrow in preparation for a track day on Sunday. Then in another week or so I'll book it in for the 30k service. (Usually if a service comes up so soon after I've already done the oil, I just tell them to leave it and I change it in another 3,000Km anyway.)
But I just wanted to ask what others would be doing in a situation like this? Is this oil-changing overkill? I admit that I do want to play it safe, as I'm unsure of the bikes history (bought with no service history, a few dents and scratches a couple of years ago with 8,820Km on the odo, oil was darker than anything I'd seen).
My main reason for the frequent oil changes, aside from trying to protect the engine as much as possible, is that someone once told me that with a track/race bike there is no such thing as 'regular maintenance' - there is only the amount of time and work that you are prepared to do, compared with the performance you expect out of the bike. And isn't performance what it's all about...?
Also has anyone used Royal Purple? I was just wondering if it can really be as good as they say it is (if so a longer running period could be expected and so cost saving due to less oil changes), or does snake oil now come in purple bottles?
Cheers!
