   Four-strokes to replace 125cc from 2012?

   The 125cc World Championship looks set to be replaced by a new, single-cylinder, 250cc four-stroke class from the 2012 season.

   According to GPOne.com, the new class - which will presumably be named Moto3 - will not have a single engine supplier, like Moto2, although “any manufacturer wishing to participate will have to build a minimum number of engines, from 10 to 15, at a price of 10,000 Euros”.

   The end of the 125cc class, the only remaining engine-size from the original 1949 world championship season, will also mark the end of two-stroke machinery in grand prix racing.

   In 2001 all three grand prix classes consisted of two-stroke motorcycles, but their lack of production relevance saw the premier 500cc World Championship replaced by a new (990cc) four-stroke MotoGP class in 2002, while 250cc was replaced by (600cc) Moto2 four-strokes at the start of this season.

   The success of Moto2, with its huge 40-rider field and unpredictable racing, is sure to have accelerated the process of replacing the 125cc class.

   Mixed feelings about this. I've always liked watching the two strokes race.

   250cc four stroke... any restriction on the type of engines they can run? I expect it would be too much to pit a 4 stroke v twin versus an i4, for instance.

   It says single cylinder. Will be interesting to see what sort of horsepower they can develop.

   If it has to be single cylinder, I'd have rather seen a 450cc limit.

   If they had half a brain they would atleast run 250 singles with the 125cc bikes...

   I would much prefer them to keep the 125cc bikes and stick motogp in the bin...
   125gp is much more entertaining!

   so theyre going to can the 125 protype class in favour of a 250cc prototype class
   Production relevance my arse...

   the big four have spent billions on four stroke engine development over the last decade, they have realised the four stroke engine is at the same stage that the two stoke was at the end of the millenium.
   -Reaching the peak of its potential
    
   so by putting the final nail in the two stroke coffin, they are ensuring sales of four stroke will continue, while making a two stroke comeback much more difficult without an international platform.

   The FIA still havnt realised that two stroke popularity is on the rise, and in a couple years we will be back!

   It's now official that 125cc Grand Prix will be replaced by Moto 3 from the start of 2012.

   250cc, four-stroke, single cylinder, 81mm maximum bore size.

   the only good thing to posibly come out of that might be a 100kg, 30hp road legal race bike...

   but that will never happen, they will all make protype racers with pnumatic valves etc so that they can rev super high...

   
   

   these days I only watch motoGP TV for the 125's and the moto2 (sure its 4T but its entertaining) I never watch the motoGP race, I find it incredibly unexciting...

   if they take away the 125's its just not going to be worth my effort changing the channel to watch it...

    good call, but I wouldnt be so quick to dismiss a two stroke come back...

    Two strokes seem to be finding there way into performance magazines more than at any point in the last 10 years.

    I am sure that several bigbore fuel injected two strokes have already been designed by major companies including KTM and Aprilia, but we must now wait untill the markets improve and hope that the ideas are not scrapped.
    I was reading an article by Orbital that had quotes from Australias Aprilia Director who stated blatantly that they have a 600cc injected Two stroke engined RS250 prototype ready to go, it just needs the bean counters to approve!

    And that suits me fine if I have to wait a few more years, that will give me time to save up...
    I would gladly part with 25k for an RS600 Factory

    I love your passion . Over the years I've had a few 2st inc RZ 250 & RZ500 but have got old and lazy these days and prefer big 4st  I am in the process of building a 1500cc 1985 GSX1100 EFE :))
    Horses for courses not many 2st in drags these days :(

    I used to have a bigblock EFE too!

    she had hayabusa pistons, massey ferguson tractor sleeves machined down to fit.

    with Katana 1000 rods (the best OEM rods), APE street/drag cams, ported head, 44 lecy's and a sidewinder pipe...
