The 2004 Goodwood Revival once again played host to the inaugural Barry Sheene Memorial Race, won last year by Wayne Gardner.

Wayne, who was suffering from Bronchitis, got off to a great start for the weekend by putting the Fred Walmsley Manx Norton 500 he was riding on pole position during Friday’s qualifying with a blistering 1:32.34, half a second ahead of second-placed Chas Mortimer. Duncan Fitchett and Phil Russell came third and fourth respectively – making it a quartet of Manx Norton’s on the front row! Legendary nice-guy and hard-charger Jamie Whitham had machine problems in qualifying so was relegated to the back of the grid.

The first eight-lap race was held at lunchtime on Saturday and it was a real cracker. No fewer than nine riders were fighting for the lead and a determined Jamie Whitham was on a mission to catch Wayne from the back of the grid. Wayne managed to hold them all off to the line after a great battle with Jamie and several lead-changes. “That was fair dinkum racing,” admitted Wayne after taking the win, “I hope the spectators enjoyed it. For old bikes they go pretty hard. Jamie is very competitive and always gives me a hard time. This is an impeccable, one-off event. It’s a real honour to be here racing.”
Come Sunday and race two it was Whitham’s turn to take the honours but, as expected, Wayne put up a huge fight.

But Jamie was determined to bring the short-stroke Manx Norton 500 home in number one spot and got Gardner on the line by a wheel. But it wasn’t enough to take the title, as Gardner’s win on Saturday had left him with a half-second overall win. The former world champion paid tribute to rival Jamie Whitham and old mate Barry Sheene as he lifted the Sheene Memorial Trophy.

“That was fun but it was hard work. Jamie out-rode me today. I like people who fight for what they want and I had no answer for him today. This race is a great tribute to Barry. We loved him and we miss him a lot.”

Lord March, owner of the property and instigator of the Goodwood Revival Festival praised the competitors, teams, guests and spectators after the weekend’s events.
“Thanks to all of you and thanks to the weather”

The winners of the weekend’s fifteen races all received their trophies and champagne and a series of overall prizes and results were announced.
Lord March closed the Revival with a simple promise. “As long as you keep coming, we’ll keep doing it.”
